How to Replace Norcold Cooling Units

If you have had your norcold cooling unit fail it is time to replace it. Here are a couple of tips on how to do it yourself or with the help of a professional technician.

First, let the new cooling unit set up for a week before turning it on. It takes that long for the fluids to mix in the cooler. If you turn it on right away the new cooler will just heat your refrigerator and not cool it.

It is also a good idea to remove the flue baffle from your old cooling unit and put it on the new one before installing it in your RV refrigerator. That will keep your fridge from getting sucked into your engine when you are driving around.

Before you install the new cooling unit, make sure the evaporator foam pack is not stuck in it. You can usually jiggle it out but if not, use a section of 2×4 to pry the foam pack out of the evaporator foam pack pocket.

JC Refrigeration installs their replacement cooling units in the freezer and refrigerated compartments of your refrigerator. They mount the thermostatic switch to a small plate on top of the refrigeration compartment rather than mounting it on the condenser fin like Norcold did. That location causes the new fans to turn on far sooner during a cooling cycle, sucking the heat out much quicker than Norcold’s fan did.

This is an important upgrade because if the refrigerator is not cooled properly it can damage the fridge and other components in your RV. It is a little more expensive but it is well worth it. The new JC Refrigeration cooling unit comes with a new universal control system, installation manual, foam sealant, thermal mastic, foil tape and LP gas plug. norcold cooling units
